According to the Winchester factory records on file at the Cody Firearms Museum, this is the first engraved model 1894, and is listed as “Rifle; 38/55 caliber; octagon barrel; plain trigger; Takedown; fancy checkered stock; pistol grip; Blued steel plate on pistol grip with monogram inlaid in gold “MWS”; engraved $16.00; Deer on one side, bear on other; Embossed work with scrolls, tip barrel & buttplate; Engraved and gold line, Rocky Mountain front; Received in the warehouse on March 5, 1895; Shipped from the warehouse on March 5, 1895, on order number 5845”. At this time, this is one of only two known relief engraved model 1894s, and has been featured in the May/June 1982 issue of The American Rifleman magazine; the Winchester Engraving book by R.L.Wilson on page 255, and the Winchester Collector magazine. |
